Our 2013 season continues with:
Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.  Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield.  Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant.  Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.  Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Richard Armitage star.

At a home for retired opera singers, the annual concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Jean, an eternal diva and the former wife of one of the residents.  Directed by Dustin Hoffman and stars Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon and Billy Connolly.

This superbly shot anti-western would prove to be the end of the line for all its three stars: Clark Gable, Marilyn Munroe and Montgomery Clift.  It is worth seeing for its extraordinary last sequence in the Nevada desert alone.  Directed by John Huston.

In 19th-century France, Prisoner 24601 Jean Valjean has for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole.  He agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s daughter, Cosette and that fateful decision changes their lives forever.  Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway star in this production, which reprises the music of the West End show based in Victor Hugo’s novel.

Raised in 18th century England, young Caroline Mathilda (Alicia Vikander) is sent to Denmark to be married to King Christian whom, it becomes clear, is schizophrenic.  When German advisor Johann Struensee arrives to help him control his affairs, Caroline is taken with his wisdom and they fall deeply in love.  With his influence over the King, he starts to think of ways in which they can change Denmark for the better.  Years in the making, you can see the evidence in the depth of the characterisation, and sumptuous production values which lend this well-crafted film a rich and satisfying feel.  Genuinely engrossing - The Times
